In 50 km. from Brest is located unique wood of Europe - the Belovezhsky reserved. The area of a wood now constitute about 1200000 hectares. Why the wood is unique? Here is the large site of untouched boggy woods of the Europe. Here there is a huge variety of kinds of flora and fauna. Here is huge number of trees-giants which you will seldom meet in other places. These are mighty oaks in diameter of a trunk more than two meters, a pine, spruce and other trees. Certain oaks reach age more than 600 years, a pine more than 460 years, a spruce – 290 years. About 60 % of territory of a wood have age more than 150 years.
In territory are 292 kinds of a lichen, about 270 kinds mosses, are known more than 900 kinds of the higher vascular plants, 59 kinds of mammals, 253 kinds of birds, 11 kinds amphibious, 7 – reptiles, 28 kinds of fishes and the richest fauna, among which only insects more than 9 000 kinds. Rare are -51 kinds of plants, 11 mammals, 16 kinds of lichens, 7 kinds of mushrooms, 52 kinds of birds., 8-fishes, 2 – reptiles, 1-amphibians and 38 kinds of insects.
Main pride The Belovezhsky reserve is, one of the most ancient animals of the world - the European bison. Now them is about three hundred specimens.
The Belovezhky reserve is today has all the highest nature protection titles. Per 1992, the decision of the UNESCO, the most site plantings of a dense forest is included in the list of the Worldwide Heritage of Mankind and became the first object, in territory of the former USSR, who has received this rank. In 1993 the Belovezhky wood has received the status of biospheric reserve. In the 1997 the Council of Europe has awarded this wood European Diploma.
Today here develops ecological tourism. Here there is a museum of the nature and is open fenced platforms with various types of animals in their habitat. For visitors are offered routes on foot and automobile routes. Here there are three hotels on 212 seats, two lodges on 16 seats. Here there is a sauna, a bar, restaurant, where it is possible to try national kitchen.
